Recorded in a single prolific session on October 24, 1960 at Atlantic Studios in New York, Coltrane Plays the Blues was assembled by Atlantic Records from material captured during the same dates that yielded My Favorite Things, and released in July 1962 as Coltrane’s final studio album for the label. Where those other sessions reached for modal abstraction and standard repertoire, this one turns inward, focusing entirely on the blues as both structure and spirit. The result is one of the more underrated albums in Coltrane’s Atlantic catalog, six originals that treat the 12-bar form not as a constraint but as a launching point for harmonic invention and rhythmic interplay. The album opens with “Blues to Elvin,” the lone track credited to drummer Elvin Jones, its slow, hypnotic groove giving way to some of Coltrane’s most searching tenor work on the entire record. “Blues to Bechet” shifts to soprano saxophone in a quiet tribute to Sidney Bechet, with McCoy Tyner sitting out and the trio pared to its barest essentials. “Blues to You” follows the same trio format, with Coltrane pressing his tenor to the outer edges of blues harmony in a manner he had developed in live club settings. On the album’s second side, “Mr. Day” is the most harmonically adventurous track, its Eastern-minor feel drawing a line from the blues toward the modal explorations Coltrane was developing simultaneously. “Mr. Syms” returns to soprano saxophone in a minor blues with a bridge, while “Mr. Knight” closes the album with a six-minute composition that balances structure and freedom in equal measure.
