Deftones’ self-titled fourth studio album originally arrived in May 2003 as the Sacramento band’s follow-up to their Grammy-winningWhite Pony. Produced by Terry Date, the record was recorded primarily at the band’s converted Sacramento rehearsal space with additional sessions at Studio X in Seattle and Larrabee Sound Studios in Los Angeles. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and achieved gold certification.

The 11-track collection blends trip-hop and shoegaze influences with the band’s alternative metal foundation. “Minerva” became the lead single, while “Hexagram” showcased the band’s heavier direction. Tracks like “Lucky You” featured DJ Crook from Chino Moreno’s side project Team Sleep, with Stephen Carpenter utilizing low G# tuning throughout most of the album.
