What stands out immediately is Ilfmans very classical approach to the music. The main theme is beautiful, with searching strings and woodwind counterpoint, and a sense of hope. But theres a sinister undercurrent, giving a sense of inevitability. The percussion has a harsh and jagged edge and provides violence, but theres a sense of humor in Ilfmans music, at one point imitating Prokofievs Peter and the Wolf suite. Its a menacing piece of work, emotionally intense yet surprisingly beautiful, with the composer not going for what youd perhaps expect, and the main theme just keeps coming back, relentless, searching. Its an amazing work that has earned its plaudits. Of course, if you dont like it, be careful who you tell. Its a harsh world out there
