Recovering the Satellites, Counting Crows’ second album, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in October 1996, a remarkable entry position for a record that producer Gil Norton shaped into something deliberately more demanding than the band’s platinum debut. Released on Geffen Records, the fourteen-track set ran nearly an hour and drew on a wider emotional register than anything the band had previously recorded. Now reissued as an RSD Essential Indie Exclusive on Geffen Records, the album returns as a standard weight red lava vinyl 2LP, remastered from the original 1/4″ production master tape.

The fourteen tracks move between mid-tempo rock arrangements and quieter moments built around Adam Duritz’s vocal phrasing and Charlie Gillingham’s keyboards. “Angels of the Silences” leads the record with a harder, more guitar-forward attack than anything on August and Everything After, reaching No. 3 on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart. “Goodnight Elisabeth” slows things considerably, a piano-anchored ballad that became one of the album’s most enduring tracks. “A Long December,” featuring accordion alongside the standard band arrangement, reached No. 6 on the US Radio Songs chart and No. 1 in Canada.

Remastered from the original 1/4″ production master tape, Recovering the Satellites is presented here with the fourteen-track sequence intact, spread over four sides of standard weight red lava vinyl. The Indie Exclusive designation makes this the limited edition pressing for independent retail, released on Geffen Records as part of the RSD Essential series.
