Description
Pianist Geri Allen leads Ron Carter and Tony Williams through a trio session built on original pieces, standards, and a Monk tribute, giving Twenty One a focused small-group identity. The album moves between Allen’s writing and familiar material without turning into a standards-only date, and the interaction between piano, bass, and drums keeps the set connected to both modern jazz language and the acoustic trio tradition as a vinyl record.
“RTG” opens the album with Allen’s own writing, while “If I Should Lose You” brings a well-known standard into the trio’s frame. “Drummer’s Song” points directly to the rhythmic role of Tony Williams, and “Introspection / Thelonious” places Monk’s influence in the sequence without making the album a tribute project. Later selections such as “Feed The Fire,” “Old Folks,” and “In The Middle” show how the program alternates between Allen originals and classic repertoire across the complete 2LP layout.
Recorded with Carter on bass and Williams on drums, Twenty One documents Allen in a trio setting that connects Detroit, New York, and the post-bop tradition through her own compositions and chosen standards. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series edition is mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal, presenting the album as a 2LP reissue.
