“Blue Bossa” opens with Dorham’s bossa nova theme and became the tune most closely tied to the album, giving Henderson a melodic line that is easy to recognize without simplifying his solo language. “La Mesha” slows the record into a lyrical ballad, while “Homestretch” returns to brisk hard bop motion. Side B moves from Dorham’s “Recorda-Me” into Henderson’s “Jinrikisha,” then closes with “Out Of The Night,” a track that brings the quintet back to a firmer swing feel and lets La Roca push the tempo.

Henderson’s debut works because the writing is strong enough to stand beside the playing.
