Robert Plant was still recovering from a serious car accident during the sessions, recording most of his vocals while seated, which gave his delivery a restrained, almost urgent edge. Bonham sounds locked in and ferocious, his drum sound drier and closer than on previous albums, and John Paul Jones keeps everything anchored with understated but crucial bass lines.
