New Order’s fifth studio album, released on 30 January 1989 and their last album released on Factory.
Recorded on Ibiza and in Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios.
The album adds Balearic Beat and Acid House influences to the band’s typical blend of electronic and rock. The cover is another Peter Saville/Trevor Key cooperation, using a garden ornament cherub statue. Saville thought the bacchanalian image was ironically fitting for the new “drug-fuelled hedonism” in the music scene.
