Type O Negative was an American gothic metal band formed in Brooklyn, New York City in 1989 by Peter Steele, Kenny Hickey, Josh Silver, and Sal Abruscato, who was later replaced by Johnny Kelly. Their lyrical emphasis on themes of romance, depression, and death resulted in the nickname “the Drab Four” in homage to the Beatles’ “Fab Four” moniker. Originally released in 2000, The Least Worst Of arrived between their darker World Coming Down and 2003’s Life Is Killing Me. This Rocktober 2025 exclusive marks the first time on vinyl in North America, presenting the quintessential greatest hits collection from one of gothic metal’s most influential bands. This limited edition Rocktober indie exclusive features black vinyl housed in a gatefold jacket.

The compilation spans the band’s career with tracks including “Black No. 1,” “Love You To Death,” “Christian Woman,” “I Don’t Wanna Be Me,” and “Everything Dies.” The collection includes rare remixes and several unreleased tracks alongside classic album cuts. “The Misinterpretation of Silence and Its Disastrous Consequences (Wombs and Tombs Mix)” opens the set, followed by “Everyone I Love Is Dead” and their signature track “Black No. 1.” Also featured are their cover of “Black Sabbath (From the Satanic Perspective),” “My Girlfriend’s Girlfriend (Cheese Organ Mix),” and a cover of Neil Young’s “Cinnamon Girl (Depressed Mode Mix).” The band’s loud, fast, straightforward musical style was influenced by pop music from the 1950s and 1960s, including classic rock groups such as Buddy Holly and the Crickets, the Beach Boys, and the Beatles, all filtered through their doom metal lens.

The band went platinum with 1993’s Bloody Kisses, and gold with 1996’s October Rust, gaining a fanbase through seven studio albums. This double LP pressing preserves Peter Steele’s distinctive bass baritone vocals, Josh Silver’s atmospheric keyboards, Kenny Hickey’s crushing guitar work, and Johnny Kelly’s powerful drumming. Type O Negative was well known for their dry, morbid and ironic sense of humor and their often slow and brooding music. Following Steele’s death in 2010, the surviving members announced they would not continue as a band, making this compilation an essential document of their legacy. This Rocktober 2025 gatefold edition honors a band that influenced countless artists in the gothic, doom, and alternative metal scenes.
